BRIDGET

Meet Bridget.  Our newest rescue!
Bridget was seen to be thrown into the river in Hebden Bridge and had to be rescued by the Fire Service from fast flowing water.  She was then taken to the stray kennels for a week - then we rescued her before she would have been destroyed.
It is no wonder that this little girl is timid and bewildered.  We didn't have a free fosterer so we are boarding Bridget with our friends at Moor View Rescue until a fosterer can be found.  She is a Mastiff X and is only around 12 to 18mths old and hasn't had the best life up to now.  Can you help mend this broken girl?

Update on Gavin

Alison who is fostering Gavin has put on our facebook page:

Gavin has had his third bath today and his skin is soooo much better.Scabs all gone and fur is growing back :) He now loves to play with his favourite toys. Surprised himself yesterday by chasing his tail and then looking shocked when he caught it!!!!!

It's amazing what the appropriate veterinary treatment (thanks Donaldsons in Mirfield!) and a good diet and TLC can do!!

Thanks Alison and family - all at YRDR are appreciative!

Update on Gordon

Here are some new pictures of the lovely Gordon.

Paula says that he is doing really well - eating a good diet and filling out. He went jogging with Craig yesterday and slept for hours!!  Gordon loves playing with his ball and would chase it all day long!
Gordon has been neutered and is going to have his 2nd vaccination this week.
A big thank you to Paula and Craig - their TLC has worked wonders for this little fella!

Pooch Art

The pupils of Malsis School, Glusburn, North Yorkshire have been busy in the Art Department. They have very kindly donated their amazing artwork for the Homepage of our website. Over the coming months we will be showcasing the different pieces of art on the Dog Rescue Homepage. Thank you very much to all the pupils involved for your hard work.

Callum Driver of year 6 was the first pupil to complete his artwork. We are sure you'll all agree it looks fantastic.

GAVIN

Meet Gavin!!!
Gavin has been named after the Leeds dog warden that asked us to help him!!
Gavin has been so lucky that he has come along so soon after our appeal for a fosterer for Gordon.  We kept all the people's details who had offered to help a staffie with skin problems and promptly contacted Alison and her family to see if their offer still stood!!
This was a big ask as Gavin has severe demodectic mange - his skin is thickened, sore and bleeding in places.

This dog must have been in absolute agony when Gavin (2 legs!!) collected him!  But immediately we could see the 'specialness' that the dog warden had seen.  What a lovely affectionate little fella this is - he definitely deserved a second chance.  Again, like Gordon - he wouldn't have stood a chance of coming out of the stray kennels and he would also have become a statistic!

He is on antibiotics and Aludex baths - he is also having Dermacton cream applied to his hotspots to cool them down and relieve the itching and soreness.

He is not housetrained but thankfully Alison is not fazed by this!  He has met the resident cats without any great hitch so hopefully this will continue!

Gavin is 12 mths old at the most and is very calm for a young staffie!
This is one very special boy - and VERY lucky!!!

With huge thanks to Alison, Dan and Amy for allowing him into their home!  As you can see ... we have no worries!!!

Gavin will cost the rescue quite a lot to get him better as skin conditions are renowned for their expense!  We are committed to getting both Gavin and Gordon in perfect health - but if anyone reading this would like to donate towards their vet bills then you can do this through the website.

GORDON

Gordon is doing really well.  His skin is a lot better and the bath with Coatex shampoo has soothed his skin and his coat is shiny.  Paula is also applying Dermacton cream which is wonderful stuff for stopping the itch/scratch cycle, cooling hotspots, soothing irritated skin and promoting hair growth.  See www.aromesse.com
Gordon is enjoying his walks, playing with his toys and snoozing (and snoring!!) on the sofa!!  Now he is on a good diet his flatulence has subsided!!!!
Paula says that Gordon is so good they don't even know they have him.   He is well enough to be neutered which will be done on Friday.

Yorkshire Rose comes up trumps again!

On Wednesday 26th September we were contacted by Nichola - one of the Leeds Dog Wardens - pleading with us to help a staffie she had picked up as a stray the day before.  He was underweight, riddled with fleas and had scratched himself bald and raw in several places.  He was also at least 6yrs old and this, with his physical condition, meant that it was highly likely he would get overlooked in kennels and end up being destroyed at the end of the week.
We wanted to help but desperately needed to find someone to foster him for us.  After an appeal on Facebook and by email to over 600 recipients - we were astounded at the offers of help that we received from across the country.
(The power of the internet and cross-posting!!)
Leeds Dog Warden service gave permission for the staffie (now named Gordon) to enjoy the rest of his statutory 7 days in the care of a foster home.
So we collected him yesterday and took him straight to the vets for a thorough check up.  He had seen a vet on Tuesday with Nichola so the fleas had gone and the antibiotics had kicked in!  Our vet was happy that he was making good progress and he was allowed on his way!
Paula and Craig have opened their home to Gordon and we cannot thank them enough.  After having a poo on their lounge carpet he settled quietly into an armchair!!!
Thank you to absolutely everyone that has been involved in any way to enable us to save Gordon.
We will keep you updated on his progress so watch this space!

Fun Dog Show - Sunday 16th Sept 2012

Well how lucky were we with the weather??
The wind was pretty gusty at times but despite a poor weather forecast, it didn't rain until the moment we had finished packing up.
Approx 3,000 people attended and we had a high number of entries into the dog show classes.
Apart from the dog show there were other activities going on such as 'have a go' agility and dog games.  Also cake stalls, tombolas, jewellery cleaning, refreshments etc.
Unfortunately the police dogs were called away so were unable to do a display - although they made an appearance later and people were able to meet the dogs and have a chat with the officers
We will be looking at how we can change the classes for the dog show next year so that it doesn't seem to drag on...and on.... and on .....!!
Thanks to everyone that attended and supported us - we had a great day and it was brilliant to see so many of our dogs come back to say hello!!

Hydro Paws in Morley

Special thanks to Michelle at http://www.hydropaws.co.uk/  for her support to the rescue -one of our foster dogs Tilly is going swimming regularly to try and reduce some of her boundless energy!!
Michelle is a fully qualified hydrotherapist and says that hydrotherapy can benefit certain conditions such as obesity, cruciate ligament injuries, patella luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis and spinal injuries amongst many others.
It can also be used to increase fitness - apart from just great fun which Tilly could tell you all about!

Here are some photos of Tilly enjoying her fun swims.

And she even gets a shower afterwards!!

Doggie Fun Day

There is a doggie fun day on Sunday 27th May at Oakwell Hall Country Park, Nutter Lane, Birstall WF17 9LG.  Between 11am and 3pm.
There will be lots of 'have a go' activities such as agility, fastest retrieve, hide and seek, nosework etc.  The emphasis here is on FUN and each activity will be tailored to each dog - so it doesn't matter how well trained (or not!!) your dog is - this is the opportunity to have fun with your four-legged friend and get some ideas for how to stimulate their brain, relieve boredom and increase the bond between you!
Each activity will be £1 per go - proceeds will be split between Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue and Iron Mountain Canine
Refreshments will be available

Steve Hoyle - Dog Trainer and Behaviourist

All at Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue would like to thank Steve Hoyle for turning Apollo the blue roan cocker spaniel around.  Poor Apollo had been so screwed up by his abusive owners and was so frightened of everybody that our vet recommended euthanasia.
As a last ditch attempt to help Apollo - we turned to Steve Hoyle at Paws With Us in Dewsbury.  With Steve and his resident canine gang, Apollo learned to enjoy being a dog and his confidence and trust improved rapidly - and after only a few weeks Apollo was ready to be rehomed with hardly a sign of his previous issues.
We would also like to thank Steve for all his help and advice with the other YRDR dogs that he has been involved with.
So if you are looking for some help with a wayward pooch - or some good kennelling with great walks whilst you are away - check this out   http://pawswithus.com

Three Peaks Charity Walk

On Saturday 7th April 2012 Paul Dyson and his Lurcher Roxy, along with fellow dog walkers and friends; Nick with Ben the collie and Gareth with Dudley the Beagle/Weimaraner cross, will walk the Three Peaks. Paul is raising money for Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue and Nick is fundraising for Freedom of Spirit Trust for Border Collies.

They have been in training since January and last week in dreadful weather they walked Whernside in treacherous conditions!  Paul even fell off the mountain but bounced and lives to tell the tale!!

They are putting in all this effort in the hope that people will donate to the rescue and show their support and admiration for the lengths they are going to for us!!

The committee at Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue are very grateful for their willingness to do the walk for our cause and hope that people will show their support.

Donations can be made either through http://www.charitygiving.co.uk/pauldyson (preferable as tax-paying donors can claim Gift Aid and so the donation is worth more!!) or by contacting Paul himself on 01924 444478 or email paul@printees.co.uk

Thank you very much!!

Thank You from Mia

To everybody that donated money and unwanted gifts for raffles and tombolas to raise money for me!

I was very hungry, sore and depressed when I arrived at Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue. The day after I arrived I got kennel cough which then turned into a chest infection and they thought I wouldn't make it ..... but with antibiotics, good food and lots of TLC - I did !!
I was on 8 small meals per day consisting of fresh chicken, pasta & rice. That was a bit expensive apparently but now I'm still on some chicken but mainly on boooring dog food........!
I have developed from the timid skinny bag of bones hiding in a dog bed - to a cheeky monkey and a bit of a handful !
I now have a posh fleece jumper (donated by a lovely kind lady called Kim at http://www.thesmartdogcompany.co.uk/)  to keep me warm at night and while in the car   - and a posh matching lead and collar of my very own .... I've never had anything nice before.
I am going for a day's stay at the local veterinary surgeons for something called spaying and vaccinations - I think it's some sort of spa day so I hope I can get my nails done!!!!

Anyway - thank you to everyone who helped with donations - it has gone directly to assist with my (rather large) food bill, got me some new clothes and will also help pay the bill at the spa!!

Thank you so much

PS Sorry about the poor photos but I'm a bit bouncy these days and find it difficult to stay still !!

Update on Mia

Mia is doing really well.  She is recovering from kennel cough which turned into a nasty chest infection.

Harry and Kath are doing a fabulous job and it just goes to prove what a difference a good diet and TLC can make!

Look at her now!

In Memory of Beau

Lovely Beau was a gorgeous collie who was rescued from the pound in March 2011 with kennel cough. Beau was very underweight but fought his way back to fitness and was then diagnosed with parvo which he also beat.  He was adopted by a lovely couple in Leeds called Lisa and Julian. Sadly just 2 days before Christmas Beau was diagnosed with cancer and had to be put to sleep. His owners are devastated. This lovely dog fought against so many obstacles that came his way and was a joy to know.
Thank you Lisa and Julian for giving him the best months of his life

RIP Beau
